da 888casino: It has recently been reported that Manchester United have offered Juan Mata a new one-year contract with the option of a further 12 months, with the midfielder’s current deal set to expire in the summer.
The Spanish international is approaching his 32nd birthday, and has largely only played a bit-part role at Old Trafford this season under both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – Mata’s starts have been limited in the Premier League this term.
It has also been reported that Mata earns £170,000-a-week on his current terms, and given his waning influence on proceedings on the pitch at the club, is it even worth giving him a new contract?

Football FanCast’s writers have their say…
James Beavis
“This would be yet another clanger from Woodward. While Juan Mata may have been a reliable, consistent and loyal performer in recent seasons, he is 31 years of age. At some point United need to look to the future rather than giving someone like the Spaniard an extra year with the option of a further 12 months. Where is the motivation for him once he has signed the deal? United need to make some serious changes at board level this summer if they want to get back to where they should be, because ridiculous decisions like this are why they are where they are now.”
Jack Saville
“This is classic Ed Woodward. Man United have wasted obscene levels of money in recent years and this is just another example of a poorly thought out business decision. Mata is a decent squad player but it’s the right time for him to go. In truth he’s never quite managed to discover his best form in Manchester and he wouldn’t be missed if they allow his contract to reach expiry.”
Matt Dawson
“Some big decisions are going to have to be made at Manchester United this summer and one of them will surely be to ship Juan Mata on. The Spaniard hasn’t done a great deal wrong but the fact he’s on £170k a week is ludicrous. For that fact alone, a new deal would be absolutely ridiculous. United don’t exactly need cash, so losing him on a free shouldn’t be a concern. It’s time for them to place faith in younger players, rather than on a man who is clearly past it.”
