Tottenham Hotspur have officially completed the signing of the 22-year-old winger Steven Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven for a fee of £27m.
The Netherlands international made his first-team debut for his former side at the tender age of just 17 and quickly became a regular presence in the squad, scoring 31 goals and assisting further 41 in a total of 149 games played.
And even though the stats suggest Spurs are getting a talented and versatile player capable of both scoring and assisting, it is actually his former gaffer’s verdict that best illustrates what he could bring to the Premier League.
Mark van Bommel used to coach PSV until December 2019 when he was replaced by Ernest Faber, but he did have the chance to see Bergwijn’s talent in person.
Here’s what he said to Fox Sports last year after PSV’s triumph over Heracles Almelo, as quoted by Tellereport:
“He can turn away, pass a man, find the right solution in the small space, has depth, is smart and can also score. He may remain in this position, but he can also play on the side.”
Quite clearly, this shows what Bergwijn is capable of and what Jose Mourinho can expect from the player moving forward.
He’s quick, small, smart and quite versatile, as van Bommel has emphasised, so the Special One should definitely be happy with this piece of business as he’s getting a real talent for his squad.
We’ll have to wait and see how he does in England but the signs are certainly promising.
