Well that’s come out of the blue, hasn’t it? Amidst all the transfers we have seen occur this summer, Chris Smalling jetting off to Italy for a season-long loan is probably up there with the best of them for pure shock value.
The England international’s first-team place at Manchester United has come under significant threat since the arrival of Harry Maguire for a world-record fee for a defender.
Indeed, Smalling’s much-maligned abilities on the ball – or lack thereof – make him an odd fit for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s intent to play out from the back. With that in mind, Sky in Italy’s claim that the 29-year-old is edging closer to a loan move to AS Roma becomes more understandable.
After hearing the news Smalling could be on his way out of Old Trafford for the current season, United fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the matter.
Many Red Devils supporters hailed Solskjaer for his role in getting rid of the centre-back and insisted he is doing a “mad ting”.
Some fans of the Manchester side also gave their props to the much-ridiculed Ed Woodward, and admitted he is a “genius” for his work in offloading players this summer.
Check out some of the delighted reaction of United fans below:
