da betcris: Rangers were disappointingly beaten 1-0 by Aberdeen at Ibrox on Wednesday night, with star striker Alfredo Morelos picking up his third red of the campaign even though we have only just entered December.
Steven Gerrard had only warned his players about their discipline prior to the clash against the Dons following Scott Arfield’s red card – their seventh of the season – at the weekend, but it appeared to fall on deaf ears on Wednesday.
Even though the visitors were reduced to 10 men themselves following Sam Cosgrove’s 34th-minute red card, the Colombian joined him for an early both just 19 minutes after the interval following a silly second booking.
What did Gerrard say?
The 38-year-old said, as quoted by The Scottish Sun:
“We never played with control, which I asked all the team to do yesterday in a meeting.
“I keep repeating myself before and after every single game about the importance of playing with control and discipline.
“But we’ve got the majority of things wrong all over the pitch.
“The first yellow for me is a little bit soft but it was probably a foul. The second one he deserves.”
What do his comments really mean?
Gerrard spoke after the weekend about needing to bring a new striker to the club – perhaps one that would be a back-up or provide support to Morelos given his clear goalscoring abilities – but that priority may now have changed.
The Liverpool legend has surely run out of patience with his talisman following three red cards this term, and he may be in the market to find an established guaranteed starting XI player to effectively replace him in the starting line-up, as well as the striker he wanted before this latest incident.
While Umar Sadiq’s Rangers career looks to be over with him barely featuring following his season-long loan move from Roma during the summer, perhaps he has also just been given one final opportunity to return from the abyss and make an impact ahead of the January transfer window.
